Yesterday we talked about what you should be focused on in 2021.
Today we are going to talk about how to accomplish it.
A lot of people set resolutions or goals at the beginning of the year. However, by the end of the year, they haven’t accomplished anything.
Next year, they say the same thing and the endless cycle continues.
One of the reasons why it’s important that you have one major focus for the year is because it allows you to leverage the power of focus.
Last year, I did a training on focus vs multi-tasking. There is definitely a time where multi-tasking is very powerful and very needed.
However, there is also a time where focus is needed and when it comes to accomplishing your major focus for the year, this is one of those times.
Think about people who have achieved massive success in their lives. Whether they might be professional athletes, entertainers, business people, etc.
The overwhelming vast majority of them go through large stretches of their lives where they are focused on nothing else but the area that they are successful in.
So let’s say you are focused and you have one target for the year. Now what?
The next step is to identify what tasks must you complete in order to achieve your major target.
The United States Military has a strategy that they teach all of their military commanders. It’s the strategy of beginning with the end in mind.
Let’s say their objective is to destroy a particular high value target, like a bridge being used to reinforce the enemy.
A commander is taught to begin with the end in. mind in this case, the destruction of this bridge.
From the end, they work backwards.
What’s the action that needs to happen prior to the destruction of the bridge?
Maybe it’s a bomb being dropped on it.
Then what is the step before that?
Maybe a plane flying over to drop the bomb.
They continue this process until they have work backwards to the point where they have all the steps necessary to complete the task.
Then they go to work!
You need to do the same thing for your major target this year.
Let’s say your major target this year is to lose 30 pounds.
What’s the step prior to you hitting your target?
Stepping on the scale and seeing your target weight?
What comes before that?
Maybe exercise to burn off excess weight.
What comes before that?
Maybe eating foods that are low in calories.
You continue this process until you have all of the steps necessary.
Then you go to work.
Now, what happens if you don’t know the steps that you need to take?
You probably won’t know each and every step to be honest.
However, you’ll usually know at least some of them.
So begin with what you know.
Alternatively, if you don’t know the steps this is where the power of tapping into a coach, a consultant or another expert comes in.
There are books that people have written where they tell you how they accomplished losing weight.
There are online courses you can buy where the expert shares how they lose weight.
There are experts you can hire like a personal trainer or a nutrition specialist where they will tell you what exercises to do. They will tell you what to eat and what not to eat.
Everything that I have learned that I’m good at today, it is because I tapped into an expert to teach me how to do it.
Whether it’s a book, a course, or personal help either one or one or in a group.
Not knowing how to do something might have been a valid excuse in the 70’s and 80s.
However, in the 21st century, it is not a valid excuse.
Social media and marketing expert Gary Vaynerchuk has a saying that makes me laugh every time I hear it.
I love my mother.
When I was a kid, if I lost something, I would tell my mother.
She would then find it for me.
Even as an adult she still has this magical ability to help me find things that I lost.
Well Gary has this saying…
“Google is your mother.”Gary Vaynerchuk
If you don’t know how to do something, you can literally pull up the Google search engine and find millions and millions of web pages with information about what it is you are trying to do.
Now grant it, not everything that you will find is accurate and effective but it will at least get you started.
That’s the most important thing.
So begin with the end in mind.
Work backwards from your goal.
Consult an expert with the parts you don’t know how to do.
This is a time tested model that is proven to help people go from where they are today to where they want to be.
It will work for you as well.
But only if you do the work.
