Yesterday we discussed why people struggle with New Year Resolutions and what’s a more effective way to experience the lasting change that you desire in 2021.
However, this brings up another issue that is often not discussed.
How do you know what is the thing you should be focused on this year?
Another common mistake that people make when it comes to New Year Resolutions is having too many of them.
There is an ancient Proverb that goes like this:
“If you chase two rabbits, both will escape.”
This is another reason why many people fail to accomplish their resolutions. They have too many of them that they are focused on and, as a result, they accomplish none of them.
Some people teach that you should have 3 to 5 goals that you are focused on. While that’s better than a dozen or more resolutions, I have found that even 3 to 5 goals for the year is too much for the average person.
What I have found that has worked best for me and that seems to work best for people that I coach is to have ONE major target that you are focused on for the year.
Having one target really helps you to truly prioritize what is most important to you.
It also makes it a lot simpler to identify the key actions that you need to take on a regular and consistent basis to accomplish your objective.
This doesn’t mean that you can’t work on anything else during the year.
In fact, it is almost guaranteed that there will be other actions that you take during the year that have nothing to do with your major target.
However, having one major target that you are focused on during the year allows you to make sure that you get the most “bang for your buck” so to speak.
How do you decide what your major target should be?
There is an exercise that I learned many years ago called “A Day In Your Life In The Future.”
In this exercise, you imagine what your life looks like 5 years from today if you have achieved everything that you want and you’re living your ideal life.
What are some of the things that you are doing that day?
Who are some of the people that you are with?
What are some of the things you own?
Take some time and imagine what that day in the future of your ideal life looks like.
Once you have a picture of what that looks like, I want you to think of one thing that you can do this year in 2021 that will move you closer to experiencing that ideal life.
For me, my ideal life is a life where I have total control of how I spend my time each and every day.
Being able to decide how I spend my time each day is what would truly allow me to be able to fulfill my personal life’s purpose to be a living example that Christ in the life makes a difference.
So knowing what my ideal life looks like, I can look at my life and how it is today and I can see what is it that currently prevents me from being able to decide how I spend my time each day.
For me, it is money.
Since I have to work for a living to earn money to support my family Monday through Friday, I only have two days during the week where I get to truly decide how I spend my day. That’s Saturday and Sunday.
Even on those days, there are still things that I might want to do but I’m unable to do so because of not having enough money to do these things.
So to me, the best way to be able to position myself so that in the future I can decide what I spend my time on each day is to have an abundance of money.
Not just making a large salary.
I need to have enough money working for me to support my lifestyle.
If my assets are producing enough each month to support my lifestyle, now I am financially free and I can now choose what I do with my time each day.
Knowing this, what is my major target for 2021?
For me, my major target is to increase my assets outside of my 401k by 300% this year.
Why did I choose this as my major target?
Back in the early 2000s, I was investing in this company that offered a revolutionary (at the time) service in the marketplace.
If you wanted to rent a DVD back in those days, you would go to a video rental store like Blockbuster Video, Hollywood Video or a Mom and Pop type video store.
It was fun to go to the store and pick out movies but there were some hassles with it as well.
The biggest hassle is you had to return the movie by a certain day otherwise you would be charged a late fee.
Well there was this new company that came out that was called Netflix.
Instead of having to go to the store, they would mail you a DVD to your house.
I started buying them up every two weeks when I got paid.
However, I got scared when Blockbuster announced they were going to do the same thing and I sold it.
I ran some math and had I continued buying them, I would be worth well over 3 million dollars today.
I would be financially free and living my dream lifestyle today.
(Side note: If you’re interested in buying stocks here’s the brokerage account that I personally use.)
So for me, the number one thing that I can do to move me closer to my dream lifestyle is to build up my assets outside of my 401k.
Your dream lifestyle might be different than mine though.
One of my friends, she had a dream to move out of America to South Africa.
She worked hard and in 2021 she made the move to South Africa.
I shared with you a few months ago the story of Patrick and Kat who had a dream to make Christian board games.
Spend some time figuring out what that is for you.
It’s ok if it takes you a few days or even a few weeks to figure it out.
It’s also ok if it changes over time.
In fact it probably will change over time.
However, I firmly believe that if you know what your ideal life looks like and you pick ONE major target that will move you closer towards that ideal life, you will make SIGNIFICANTLY more progress than most people.
