In this episode we talk about How To Get What You Want In Life! I am a firm believer that mastering the concept of stewardship is the key that unlocks the door to getting what you want in life. No matter what you want in life, you will need to manage your time, talents and skills, money, health and relationships to get it. We talk about the importance of identifying your destination, identifying your why and identifying your vehicle.

What is the secret to getting what you want in life?

I believe the key to getting what you want in life is to become a better steward.

If you are able to master the concept the stewardship it will allow you to get whatever you are looking for in life.

For example, if you are a good steward over your time, you will have more time to engage in the necessary actions that are required to get what you want in life.

If you are a good steward over your talents and skills, your talents and skills will make room for you and create opportunities for you, that will allow you to get what you want in life.

If you are a good steward over your money, your financial resources will give you the options that you need in order to be able to purchase or secure whatever it is you want in life.

If it’s not something that can be purchased or secured, it will give you the free time to be able to pursue it, if you have mastered your money and financial resources.

If you are a good steward over your health, you will have the energy and the wellness necessary in order to pursue what you want in life.

If you are a good steward over your relationships, you will be able to cultivate healthy connections that will support you in your goal of getting what you want in life.

The key to getting what you want in life is to become a better steward.

Let me take you down the road to becoming a better steward.

Step #1: Identify Your Destination

The first step to becoming a better steward is to identify your destination.

What is it that you are attempting to accomplish?

Maybe you might want to make more money.

Maybe you might want to lose weight.

Maybe you might want to get married.

Maybe you are looking to get a better job.

Maybe you want to put your kids in private school.

You need to identify where it is that you’re trying to go. If you don’t identify where you are trying to go then you won’t get there.

If you don’t know exactly where you want to go, you can be the best steward in the world but if you don’t know where you’re going good stewardship isn’t going to help you because you don’t have a destination in mind.

You want to identify what your destination is and you want to be specific.

For example, let’s say I’m in New York and I want to go to Los Angeles. Los Angeles is cool but that’s not a specific destination. If I want to go to Los Angeles, I have to identify exactly WHERE it is I want to go in Los Angeles

Maybe I might want to go to Dodger stadium in Los Angeles. That’s a specific destination.

One of the biggest challenges that I see that prevents people from getting what they want in life is they aren’t specific.

For instance, they say “I want to make more money.” Well, how much more money do you want to make? That’s very important.

If you want to make an extra $100 per month, what’s required to do that is a lot different verses if you want to make a million dollars a year.

You have to identify your destination and be specific. What is it exactly that you want? What is it exactly that you’re looking for?

If you want to lose weight how much weight do you want to lose? Do you want to lose 10 pounds? Or 100 pounds?

What’s required to lose 10 pounds is going to be a lot different verses what’s required to lose 100 pounds. Therefore you have to be specific.

Identify your destination. What is it that you are trying to accomplish?

Step #2: Identify Your Why. Why Is This Important To You?

The second step is to identify why this is important to you.

Your why is important. Your why is going to give you the fuel that you need in order to be able to accomplish what it is that you want.

For instance, again, using the example of I’m going from New York to Los Angeles. Let’s say I’m taking a plane and I’m going to fly from New York to Los Angeles.

What happens if that plane doesn’t have any fuel in it?

Well, I’m not going to be going from New York to Los Angeles!

As powerful of a vehicle a plane is, it’s useless if it doesn’t have any fuel. The fuel powers the plane to be able to take off the ground, to be able to fly across the country and to be able to land safely at my desired destination.

The same is true for being able to get what you want.

Your why, or the reason why you want that thing is going to give you the fuel that you need in order to be able to accomplish it. Your why powers your vehicle to get you to your intended destination.

If you want to lose weight, why do you want to lose weight? What benefits are you looking to get as a result of losing weight?

Maybe one benefit that you are looking to get is the way your clothes fit as a result of the lost weight. Maybe one benefit for losing weight and probably the most important benefit is to be healthier and to have more energy.

You have to identify why is it important to you.

Another thing to consider in addition to what benefits that you get from that is what things you are trying to avoid as well.

People are motivated by two things. A sense of gain and to avoid consequences.

Maybe one of the benefits to losing weight is you don’t want to develop cardiovascular disease.

Most people are more driven by the desire to avoid consequences than they are by the desire to gain benefits. I’m actually not one of those people, I’m more driven by the desire to gain benefits. However, I’m in the minority. Most people are actually driven by the desire to avoid consequences.

If you know that about yourself and you know that you are better at avoiding consequences than going after benefits, you also want to identify as part of your why, what is it that you are trying to avoid?

Step #3 – Identify Your Vehicle

The third step is to identify your vehicle. What actions are you going to take to get to your destination?

Using the example again, if I’m trying to travel from New York to Los Angeles, there are a number of ways I can get there.

I can get on a plane and I can fly fly.

I can get in a car and I can drive.

I can get on a bus and ride a bus there.

I can get on a train and take a train there.

I can get on a boat and take a boat there.

I can ride a bike there.

I can even walk there. Now I wouldn’t recommend walking there but it is an option. I can take my two feet and walk from New York to Los Angeles.

You want to identify your vehicle. Your vehicle is what actions are you going to take to get to your specific destination.

Let’s use the example of making more money. What vehicle are you going to use to make more money? There are a number of ways you can do that.

Maybe you might want to get another job. You might have one job and you want to get a second job. I’ve definitely used that vehicle myself. I’m glad I’m not dong that anymore. However, there was a period for about two years where I was working two jobs.

Maybe your vehicle is you want to start selling stuff online. Selling stuff online is a great way to be able to earn additional income. Maybe that might be your vehicle.

Maybe your vehicle is you want to start a network marketing business. There’s a company where they offer a product that you’re really passionate about and you want to engage in network marketing.

Maybe your vehicle is you want to become an affiliate. An affiliate is basically you have a company and they give you a link. You share that link with people and if they purchase from that link, they will pay you a percentage of whatever they make from that person. Maybe you want to engage in affiliate marketing.

Maybe you want to invest in the stock market to earn more money.

There are a number of different vehicles that you can use to get to your intended destination. You have to identify what your vehicle is.

Each of those vehicles have advantages and disadvantages.

Using the example of traveling from New York to Los Angeles. The plane might be one of the most expensive vehicles. Although right now with the economy being what it is, the plane might be one of the cheapest ways to get there.

However, in typical times, a plane might be one of the most expensive vehicles to get from New York to Los Angeles. The benefit is it’s going to get you there faster.

A train will not get you there as fast and it might be almost as expensive as a plane. The biggest benefit that the train offers is the train is going to be one of the most comfortable ways to travel from New York to Los Angeles because you have the most space.

A car is not going to get you there as fast and isn’t going to be as comfortable as a train. However a car might be less expensive to get from New York to Los Angeles especially if you are traveling with a group.

A boat may be very comfortable, particularly if it’s like a big cruise ship. However the disadvantage is a boat is going to take you a long time to get there.

Each of these vehicles are have advantages and disadvantages. Therefore you want to identify what vehicle works for you. What advantages work best for you and what disadvantages are deal stoppers for you. That’s what will help you to be able to get what you want.
